crew member racing rorc transatlantic race

Embark as a crew member racing RORC Transatlantic Race 2025. Departing from Lanzarote in the Canary islands, heading to Grenada in the Caribbean to participate in an “offshore” race of more than 3000 nautical miles (5500 km). On board Libertalia, crewed Volvo 60, enjoy a unique offshore racing experience in the IRC Zero class. An unique opportunity to confront yourself in the fleet and experience extraordinary moments within a crew throughout a training program over 3 days before leaving Lanzarote or while delivering from Lorient in South Brittany.

Crew member racing on an XXL transatlantic

We propose you to be part of the crew of a Volvo 60, 19.50m racing monohull to enter the RORC Transatlantic Race. Supervised by four professional sailors (skipper Captain 200 Sailing, navigator, number one and tactician), the spirit of competition is essential. Getting involved as a teammate in such an event, whatever your level, is not trivial. Libertalia is an efficient and extreme racing sailboat. It is a demanding and powerful unit, a Formula 1 of the seas with very spartan comfort.

The duration of boarding is 20 days. You will embark in Lanzarote or Lorient La Base for those who wish to sail Libertalia from Brittany to the Canary islands from where the RORC Transatlantic Race will start. The training days and / or the delivering allow the team members to train, understand the boat, to get to know each other and to assess the levels of each one. On board, navigation during the race is punctuated by the watchings: up, down and “stand by”.
If you want to embark to train delivering Libertalia from Lorient to Lanzarote, offshore sailing course, it’s here …

An organization by eminent Royal Ocean Racing Club

Modern IRC boats, multihulls as well as classic yachts are invited to participate in this annual race which each year attracts competitors from all over the world.

The RORC Transatlantic Race is the longest offshore race in the RORC Championship. It was initiated a few years ago to join the famous RORC Caribbean 600 (where we will be present and for which registrations are possible). This allows RORC members and Maxi Yachts owners to race across the Atlantic before entering the racing season in the Caribbean.

Message received from Libertalia – 2022 edition

“Life on the ocean is not a long calm river! On the 9th day of racing in the RORC Transatlantic Race, the 13 men and women on board the Volvo 60 Libertalia thought they had done the hard part after crossing the front in the middle of the week. The gybe had placed them on the direct route to Granada and everyone said to themselves that the descent with the North then North East wind would only be long slides under spinnaker.
They took it very badly because the concentration at the helm saw them slipping west, extending their route by as many lost degrees. The squalls remind them not to confuse speed with haste and luffing starts sound like an immediate sanction… the boat lies down, spinnaker slams, orders fly out and it’s still lost ground and places at the ranking.
But time does things well and motivation takes over and each team member becomes aware day after day of their place and the importance of their daily work at each shift change: stowing, change of spinnaker, meal, sleep, small talk … all for one and one for all!
Yesterday we celebrated with Neptune and the complicity of Habana the of Nicolas, a great moment of conviviality that only offshore sailing can offer us. A few days before arrival, we don’t give up.”

Communication on board

The means of communication on board are reserved for the safety of the board. Communications by satellite phone (Iridium) or email are therefore not offered. Before you leave, let your loved ones know that you will not be reachable until after your crossing. Our team only contacts families ashore if there is a problem on board. So no news, good news!
The boat is “tracked” and visible on the race website or on the YB Races smartphone application.
